The Mackinac Island Recreational Department has updated it's webpage to feature the new 2010 'Seasons of Mackinac' calendar, available for $10.00 plus $2.50 shipping and handling.
The images in the calendar were selected during the island… Continue
In Part One of my guide of the top things to do, I listed many of the most familiar island activities, but also a few that some may not be familiar with. I think that's a good thing. Like so many activities we engage in, we tend to stick with what we know - the tried and true. Sometimes it's going back to a favorite restaurant or hotel. On Mackinac Island, it's doing the things that, well, are easiest to do! But Mackinac Island has more to offer if you leave the few blocks of… Continue
Michigan native Doris Kelly will be signing copies of her new book, 'Mystery of the Copper Turtle' on Friday, July 3rd at 2:00PM at The Island Bookstore on Mackinac Island.
From her website: 'A stolen copper turtle, a monstrous green Gi-bi, a haunted music hall, and a man missing from the Governor’s Conference — suddenly, Jared and Sadie’s boring Mackinac Island summer perks up! Mystery of the Copper Turtle is the… Continue
I found this card on CardCow after finding out about the upcoming tours of Round Island Lighthouse on July 11th. It's hard to imagine the lighthouse in this state of disrepair and even harder to imagine Mackinac Island… Continue
Mackinac Island offers visitors many different options for relaxation, biking, hiking, riding horses, but this trip it offered me a chance to meet some incredible people. While I've been a fan of the island for over a decade, it's only been a few months I've started writing about it in this blog, Twitter or Facebook. Yet in that short time, the internet has allowed me to meet folks I would have never known otherwise.
When you share a common interest, conversation comes… Continue
Though the great weather would have been enough to make this past weekend memorable, I have to admit it was meeting all the great people on the island. I've spent a few hours each day talking to some long time residents, new residents and visitors like myself. Each of them has contributed to making this visit the best yet, and I'll be sharing their advice, tips and stories in upcoming posts.
In the meantime, I still have one more day on the island, so it's back to exploring!
Pardon the interruption...but my computer has crashed. Of all places my new Dell laptop decides to stop functioning properly, it's on Mackinac Island! I'm using the computer at the internet cafe for this post, but it looks like the bulk of my postings may not happen until the computer issue is fixed! Here's hoping I can sort it out tomorrow!
In the meantime, I'm shooting hours of video and travelogues that I will be posting in the coming weeks. Have a great weekend.
The Mackinac Island Lilac Festival is well underway and beginning Thursday evening, you'll be treated to daily updates from the festival and around Mackinac Island during my visit. Look for blogs, videos and photos all posted here, on the Facebook page and frequent updates on the Twitter account.
If you're visiting the island this weekend, please let me know. I am planning an informal get-together at the Pink Pony on Saturday evening at 6PM, though I am also happy to meet when it's… Continue
This postcard from 1908 by the Curt Teich & Company shows Mackinac Island Crescent Beach. The photo location appears to be just east of where the Bay View Bed & Breakfast now stands and looks west toward downtown.
The 60th annual Mackinac Island Lilac Festival is underway! This island is noted for it's large lilacs many of which resemble trees more than shrubs and some of which could approaching two hundred years old. During a visit in 1947, Naturalist Carl D. La Rue wrote that some of the lilacs could be 118 years old based on his observations. The lilacs obviously like the climate of Mackinac Island.… Continue
By trade, I'm a cameraman. It's my job to work with broadcast and corporate clients to record important events, activities or stories that will be turned into news features, documentaries or even sales videos.
I've had a camera in my hand and to my eye for as long as I can remember, even shooting Super 8 movies when I was in Elementary School. Cameras, especially video cameras are a magical machine to me. They capture moments not likely to be repeated and allow viewers the unique… Continue
This postcard is of Mackinac Island's old Agency House, which was the home to Anne in the book by the same name by author Constance Fenimore Woolson. Anne Cottage on Main Street now stands on the site of the Agency House.
(Note: I am moving the Postcard of the Week to my blog line so they… Continue
My husband and I are going to be visiting St. Ignace next year in May. We are coming up to meet my birth family that I just found. Next year in April will be our 10 year wedding anniversary and we were wanting to do a vow renewal on Mac Island but…Continue
As I continue to do my homework, I am finding more and more things to see and do on the island. I think we will need more than a week!! Today, I stumbled across The Silver Birches. Can anyone tell me more about this? Thanks!
