Horses arriving on Mackinac Island

I shot this video as horses arrived on the island on June 1, 2010. It's a sight that is occurring regularly right now and will continue through early June.

Nearly all the hotels, B&B's, restaurants and shops are now open with the remaining businesses opening in the next week.

2012 season wraps up, a winter visit offers new experiences

With the 17th Annual Mackinac Island Great Turtle Run on Saturday, the Somewhere In Time Weekend and the Close the Grand event, the 2012 season on Mackinac Island effectively comes to a close. Some businesses have already closed, but most are in shutdown mode this week, anticipating one last 'pop' of business during the sold-out race on Saturday.

By nearly all accounts, it was a good season on the island, which saw tourism numbers increase, a few new businesses open and others upgrade…

Book Review: 'Mackinac Island Ferry Boats'

While I love to visit Mackinac Island, I still have to spend more time away from it than I’d like. To help pass the time until my next visit, I like to read books, watch DVD’s and surf the internet in search of anything related to the island. Fortunately, I’ve found a few treasures that I’ll be sharing with you over the next few months here on the blog.

The first item is a book that while promoted as a ‘behind the scenes’ book, is really more of a photo essay of Arnold Transit ferry…

Mackinac Island in 1944

Here's an episode of James A. Fitzpatrick's 'Traveltalks' films that were produced by Metro Goldwyn Mayer between 1930 and 1955. Fitzpatrick produced over 200 of these short films that visited locations around the globe.

In this film, there's some great images of the island that capture a moment in time. Be sure to notice the dirt roads and condition of the Biddle House, the oldest home on the island. In… Continue

It's time for the Winter Festival on Mackinac Island

Get ready for a weekend full of pictures and video from Mackinac Island. I've only visited the island once before during the winter (New Year's 1999), so I'm looking forward to this visit quite a bit! When I first decided to make the trip, I mentioned it to friend and blog member Brenda Horton who soon decided that she and her friend Dawn, also from Georgia, would hop a ride in the rental car with me from Flint to St. Ignace. When Jill from the Island Bookstore heard of our doings, she joined… Continue

'Ice Bridge' movie releases new widescreen trailer

If you haven't seen 'Ice Bridge' you really should. It's a look at Mackinac Island that the majority of visitors never see. The filmmakers have just posted a new trailer for the film which continues to gather accolades from film festivals and fans.

I purchased a copy of the film about 18 months ago and was fortunate enough to meet the filmmakers last summer during a visit to the island. They've produced a film that only someone who lives on the island could… Continue

Round Island Lighthouse preservation group formed

There are a few iconic symbols of Mackinac Island that when I see them, make me smile. Round Island Lighthouse is one of those landmarks. Though by design it marks a passage for freighters, it also stands as a silent sentinel to the passage of time on Mackinac Island. The lighthouse was nearly lost to a storm on Lake Huron when it was abandoned, but a dedicated group worked to restore the light to it's former glory. Last year, a new group was formed to continue the labor of love to see this… Continue
