Evening is an especially pleasant experience on Mackinac Island. The crowds have thinned and the air has cooled. Visitors are strolling along Main Street enjoying the summer evening when the paced has slowed from the afternoon. Sit back and enjoy the evening with them in this episode of 'Five Minutes on Mackinac.'

Rush hour on Mackinac Island isn't quite the same as it is anywhere else in America. Perhaps that's one of the reasons I enjoyed watching it from my perch above Main Street. The 2nd floor balcony of the Lilac Tree Suites and Spa provided a great view of Main Street on this busy summer morning. Carriages were lined up, waiting to be filled with visitors, drays were busy hauling freight, dockporters hauling baggage and visitors strolling the still fairly empty sidewalks. Take five minutes to…Continue

The latest Five Minutes on Mackinac is now available here and on our YouTube Channel. In this episode, I set up just east of The Island House Hotel looking toward St. Anne's Church on an early summer afternoon during the Lilac Festival. The lilacs were in full bloom adding some wonderful color to the already vibrant palette of colors on Mackinac.
Sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of Five Minutes on Mackinac.

Another season on Mackinac Island is well underway, in fact nearly halfway through, so it’s certainly time to update you on some of the most noticeable changes on the island this year.
First, a new island activity that launched late last season. Great Turtle Kayak Tours operates on an on-call basis and launches it’s tours from behind the Horse Corral Mall on Main Street.…Continue

Mackinac Island is certainly one of my passions in life. I like to visit it, learn about it and in the age of social media, talk about it with other fans. I relish being on the island when the lilacs are blooming and this year our trip was coinciding with the end of the Lilac Festival. While lilacs don't always work off the Tourism Bureau calendar of events, 2013 was shaping up to have boatloads of blooms by the end of the ten day festival.…Continue

There are some days that I miss being on the island. To help that withdrawal, I decided to videotape scenes all around downtown, the bluff and harbor for five uninterrupted minutes. Each video captures the sights and sounds of everyday life on the island. No music, no narration, just the sounds that surround us on the island.
This first 'Five Minutes on Mackinac' is titled 'A Main Street Afternoon.' The second video, 'Sunrise over the Bay' captures the peace of an early morning when…Continue

The hour-long broadcast originated from the 2nd story of the Lilac Tree Suites and Spa and was produced entirely by the Mackinac Island Blog's own Mike Forrester.
If you weren't able to see it live, or just want to watch it again, here it is, in it's entirety. Enjoy!…Continue

I shot this video as horses arrived on the island on June 1, 2010. It's a sight that is occurring regularly right now and will continue through early June.
Nearly all the hotels, B&B's, restaurants and shops are now open with the remaining businesses opening in the next week.

With the 17th Annual Mackinac Island Great Turtle Run on Saturday, the Somewhere In Time Weekend and the Close the Grand event, the 2012 season on Mackinac Island effectively comes to a close. Some businesses have already closed, but most are in shutdown mode this week, anticipating one last 'pop' of business during the sold-out race on Saturday.
By nearly all accounts, it was a good season on the island, which saw tourism numbers increase, a few new businesses open and others upgrade…Continue
I have a big update after our visit to the island last week. Every year I take a look at what’s new on the island and this year there is quite a bit to report.
Downtown is seeing lots of changes, most for the better, in my opinion. One thing that can’t be denied is that business owners are spending money making improvements, upgrades or changes to their businesses. After several years of stagnation, it’s nice to see fresh coats of paints and new businesses opening their…Continue
