Fort Holmes, the highest point on Mackinac Island, was once the home to an actual fort - albeit a small one that was protected only by an earthen berm, which still exists today. While it is a bit of a hike from downtown, the view of the Straits is spectacular and unobstructed from east to west. If you visit Fort Holmes, be sure to visit nearby Point Lookout, which offers a great view to the east and Sugar Loaf…
Last week, the forecast for Mackinac was not looking especially good. Rain and cool temperatures. Not unexpected but not welcomed, either. I've been remarkably lucky that the weather has cooperated quite well on nearly all of my visits. When I have extended family with me, as on this trip, I make an extra wish for good weather. I'm happy to report the weather has been incredible since we arrived on Wednesday evening.
