Postcard of the week

Here's a view of downtown near the Arnold Dock that many of you will recognize.
Even though the card is from the 1950's, the scene is much the same today!

Round Island Lighthouse preservation group formed

There are a few iconic symbols of Mackinac Island that when I see them, make me smile. Round Island Lighthouse is one of those landmarks. Though by design it marks a passage for freighters, it also stands as a silent sentinel to the passage of time on Mackinac Island. The lighthouse was nearly lost to a storm on Lake Huron when it was abandoned, but a dedicated group worked to restore the light to it's former glory. Last year, a new group was formed to continue the labor of love to see this… Continue

Postcard of the week

Fort Holmes, the highest point on Mackinac Island, was once the home to an actual fort - albeit a small one that was protected only by an earthen berm, which still exists today. Taking time to say hello...in person

In today's online, virtual world, we often find ourselves chatting with people from everywhere imaginable about a wide range of topics. I started this blog to share my love of Mackinac Island with the world and what has happened has been nothing short of incredible. I've found that I'm far from alone in my admiration of this special little island. It's amazing what a wide range of people I've written to, spoken with and heard from - all of them very different but with a shared interest. Brenda… Continue

A Grand Day on Mackinac

Last week, the forecast for Mackinac was not looking especially good. Rain and cool temperatures. Not unexpected but not welcomed, either. I've been remarkably lucky that the weather has cooperated quite well on nearly all of my visits. When I have extended family with me, as on this trip, I make an extra wish for good weather. I'm happy to report the weather has been incredible since we arrived on Wednesday evening.

Each day I plan at least one… Continue

Labor Day and the end of summer

It's always with mixed emotions that I greet Labor Day weekend. It's a signal that summer is coming to an end, but since I'm a big fan of fall, I also look forward to the cooler temperatures, changing colors of autumn leaves and Mackinac Island.

I've spent more time on Mackinac in September than any other month of the year. Often it's been on Labor Day weekend for the annual Bridge Walk, but sometimes it's later in the month when crowds have thinned and the island takes on a… Continue
