Round Island Lighthouse Open House is July 10th

If you are on Mackinac Island on July 10th, be sure to make the trip to Round Island for a rare opportunity to visit the lighthouse. Free tours will be conducted by Freeland Boy Scout Troop 323 from 10:00am to 4:00pm, weather permitting. The cost for round-trip transportation to Round Island is $10 and the charters will be departing from the Arnold Coal Doc on Mackinac Island. Guests must be at least 8 years old. Transportation to and from Round Island is very challenging for people who have difficulty walking or have physical issues that minimize movement. It is also necessary to transfer between boats and Round Island has rocky shores and pathways. Closed toe shoes are required.

The open house is sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, Hiawatha National Forest, Freeland Boy Scout Troop 323 and the Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society.

I had the chance to visit the lighthouse a few weekends ago and it's worth the effort to visit. The lighthouse tower offers a fantastic view of Mackinac Island, one few people ever get to experience.

I videotaped my visit to the lighthouse, so watch for that video in the coming days!

Thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind. Maybe instead of just one day, they could break it into a two day event.

The lighthouse open house is the 2nd Saturday in July each year. This year they had over 200 visitors. The biggest problem the organizers face is insufficient capacity to move people to Round Island and back. They are aware it's an issue and hope to have a solution for 2011. Visiting Round Island is a rare treat and it's obvious a lot of people are interested in making the trip.

Do you know if this is something they do every year? Planning a big trip next year with our entire family and would like to plan our visit around this event if they do this every year.

Mary, the lighthouse needs extensive renovation on the inside due to vandals and neglect for many years, but the Boy Scouts and Society have worked hard to preserve the structure. It's worth a visit.
