Round Island Lighthouse Open House July 9

On July 9th, make a visit to nearby Round Island and enjoy a tour through and to the top of Round Island Lighthouse. Each year, Freeland Boy Scout Troop 323 opens the iconic lighthouse from 10AM to 4PM and provides tours of the lighthouse, including the tower.

Charter boat transportation is provided for $10 round-trip, per person with boats departing from the Arnold Coal Dock (the dock just west of their ferry dock). Closed-toe shoes are recommended and you need to be able to walk on rocky surfaces and perhaps through a little water while getting in and out of the boat on Round Island. This is a very popular event, but the weather and water conditions dictate operation of the boat.

If you're on the island July 9th, try to make time for the visit to this historic landmark, built in 1895 and currently under restoration.

And I love the flying of the flag over the lighthouse. Pretty neat. Thanks for sharing your pictures, at least I can visit through them. :)

Comment by Mike Forrester on July 10, 2011 at 8:14pm: Hilde, I did visit yesterday and just posted a picture that I took from the southeast side of the lighthouse. They started running the boats early, so I was on Round Island before 9AM and didn't leave until almost 11AM. What a treat to visit such a famous landmark. The scouts did a great job and ran a smooth operation!

Some of the scout leaders think they know which rocks Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve sat on while filming on Round Island. I should have taken a picture to compare to the movie scene!
